Williston Basin International Airport (XWA) Opens
On October 10, Williston Basin International Airport (XWA) became only the fourth new commercial airport to open in the US in the past decade and the first ground-up commercial airport built in the Midwest since the 1940s.
We’re proud that Ulteig was selected by the City of Williston in June 2017 to provide program management services to build XWA. During the project we were instrumental in securing $167M in federal and state funding, as well as managed 29 active contracts, 16 prime contractors, 16 consulting companies and seven tenant projects. Additionally, our successful management of cultural monitoring on site resulted in the FAA wanting to use this project’s model for future federally-funded projects.
The 1,600-acre XWA airport is functionally replacing Williston’s former Sloulin Field International Airport (ISN), listed as one of the 10 fastest-growing airports in the nation. XWA airport is 100,000 square feet—almost 10 times the size of its predecessor—and designed to serve as a “right-sized” facility to meet the region’s needs, allowing flexibility for future expansion demands.
