Second Wind: How Repowering Breathes New Life into Wind Farms

Ulteig's Phillip Loy on the benfits of repowering aging wind farms

As wind energy continues to play a growing role in the US power sector, many wind-farm owners face an important question: How can they get more value from existing assets? In a new article for Wind Systems Magazine, Ulteig Renewable Lead Engineer Phillip Loy explores why repowering is emerging as one of the most practical and cost-effective strategies for extending the life and performance of mature wind projects.

Why Repowering Matters

Rather than starting from scratch, repowering allows owners to modernize existing wind farms with newer, more efficient technology while leveraging infrastructure already in place. Loy notes that today’s turbines can generate significantly more energy than those installed just a decade ago, creating opportunities to boost output, improve reliability and strengthen project economics. Additionally, he writes, “Acquiring and repowering an existing wind farm can be far more practical than developing a new project from the ground up and often has minimal regulatory approvals as compared to a new site.”
