What DOE’s Transmission Study Signals for Renewable Developers
As electricity demand continues to grow across the United States, transmission planning is receiving renewed attention from utilities, regulators and grid operators. The US Department of Energy’s draft National Transmission Needs Study examines how rising load growth, evolving generation resources and increasing congestion are shaping the need for long-term transmission investments nationwide.
For renewable developers, the study reinforces an important reality: transmission planning is becoming an increasingly important part of project development strategy. Growing data center demand, expanding interconnection queues and transmission constraints are creating new considerations that can influence project timing, upgrade costs, curtailment risk and overall project economics.
The report also points to a broader industry objective to move toward longer-term transmission planning horizons. As utilities, regional transmission organizations and other stakeholders evaluate transmission needs 10 to 20 years into the future, developers may have greater opportunities to understand where system upgrades, load growth and new transmission investments could impact future project viability.
We asked Camilo Gallego, Transmission Planning Market Technical Lead at Ulteig, what renewable developers should be paying attention to as these trends continue to evolve:
“One of the most important takeaways from the DOE study is that transmission planning and project development are becoming increasingly interconnected. As utilities evaluate long-term transmission investments and large load growth continues to emerge across many regions, developers who understand future transmission constraints, congestion risks and planned system upgrades can make more informed decisions about project siting, interconnection strategy and long-term project economics. The earlier these factors are evaluated, the greater the opportunity to reduce uncertainty and improve overall project viability.” – Camilo Gallego, Transmission Planning Market Technical Lead
For developers navigating increasingly complex transmission and interconnection landscapes, proactive planning can create opportunities to identify risks earlier, strengthen development strategies and improve project outcomes.
