Redlands Parkway Roundabout

Enhancing Safety and Reducing Traffic

The SH 340 & Redlands Pkwy Roundabout project was created to improve the safety of the SH 340 & Redlands Parkway intersection, which experienced 28 accidents from 2010 to 2015. The vast majority of these involved rear-end and left-turning accidents. Improving the safety of the intersection is the project’s top goal, in addition to enhancing aesthetics and addressing future projected traffic volumes.

This $5 million project included converting the existing signalized intersection at SH 340 (Broadway) and Redlands Parkway to a roundabout, roadway resurfacing, pavement reconstruction, guardrail improvements, drainage improvements, sidewalk construction, ADA improvements, and signing and striping. Ulteig was selected to provide construction management, inspection and public information services.

LISTENING TO OUR CLIENT

The project posed many challenges during the construction phase, including the requirement to keep the intersection open during construction. To meet this goal, our team designed a temporary roundabout as an alternative phasing plan that was ultimately implemented on the project. This was an innovative solution for both CDOT and Ulteig, and posed many challenges while designing the temporary roundabout, especially related to turning movements. However, the implementation of this temporary roundabout proved to be the optimal solution and allowed traffic to continuously flow without stopping construction.

RESULTS

By addressing client needs with innovative solutions, Ulteig completed the project ahead of schedule and under budget. Additional benefits included:

  • A reduction in project phasing, which helped expedite the timeline
  • A reduction in queue at the intersection from one minute, 35 seconds to just 25 seconds
  • Zero CDOT-reportable accidents
  • The elimination of the need for temporary traffic signals and a reduction in other traffic control devices, resulting in a cost savings for taxpayers of approximately $250,000

Ulteig received three awards for this project: the 2018 Engineering Excellence Honor Award from ACEC, the CCA Project Management Award and the Excellence in Concrete Paving Award from ACPA.
