Ulteig was the trusted engineering partner for a major client responding to an unexpected switchgear fault that impacted operations at a critical hydroelectric pumping plant. Demonstrating agility, one of Ulteig’s core values, the team swiftly mobilized and began project work within days to support rapid restoration efforts.
Ulteig provided project management, electrical design, relay settings, on-site commissioning, bill of materials development and emergency purchasing to support restoration efforts.
The project started with a site walkdown alongside the client to conduct forensic analysis, document findings, verify field wiring, and develop a replacement plan. Once approved by the client, Ulteig promptly began the design of a full demolition and construction package that included 1-line diagrams, 3-line diagrams, schematics, field connection diagrams, and layout drawings for the new panels.
Additionally, Ulteig provided relay settings, logic diagrams, and test plans for the transmission line, station bus, main transformer, medium-voltage bus, station service transformer and three pumping motors. Relaying included a wide array of SEL offerings that were utilized for line protection, unit transformer and station service protection, bus protection, and pumping motor protection.
Through the combined efforts of Ulteig and the client, the design was completed in just over 1 month, far shorter than the usual six-month relay retrofit timeline. As a result, the plant resumed operations approximately two months after the incident.
Following the project’s success, the client engaged Ulteig to develop a comprehensive suite of temporary protection panels, ensuring enhanced preparedness for future emergency situations.
