FERC 881: Updates and Information to Prepare for Compliance

FERC 881: Deadline Approaching

As the July 12, 2025 deadline for FERC Order 881 compliance draws closer, it’s imperative to begin the necessary steps to align with the mandates. Order No. 881 requires public utility transmission providers to implement ambient-adjusted ratings (AAR) on the transmission lines over which they provide service.

Comprehensive planning is essential, and FERC 881 stands as a prime example of how policy, legislative and federal agency engagement – coupled with Ulteig’s comprehensive consulting – can keep utilities at the forefront, adeptly navigating the ever-evolving energy landscape. Ulteig is ready and equipped with specialized expertise in the design and engineering of substations, transmission lines and distribution grid modernization. Our strategic partnerships and technological solutions position us to address the challenges posed by new regulation.

FERC ANOPR with Dynamic Line Ratings (DLR)

Federal efforts have been underway to increase the reliability and functionality of the US electric grid. Some of these regulations, such as FERC Order 1920, and legislation, such as the BIG WIRES Act, are focused on the functional and physical expansion of the inter-regional transmission system. However, “build bigger” can come with bigger burdens of time, expense and social opposition. With FERC Order 881, the Commission sought to ensure that grid operators are getting the most out of individual stretches of infrastructure – regardless of size or scale – where there may be efficiencies to gain.

FERC has taken another step with order 881 with a June 2024 ANOPR that seeks feedback on meteorological, topographic, technical, financial and other metrics that could be used to incorporate dynamic line ratings into the previous reforms. “Build smarter and use better” can not only serve as a stopgap as the US looks to build out its electric grid but also as an enduring complement to traditional expansion initiatives.

Ulteig & LineVision Partnership Helps to Solve FERC 881 Compliance Challenges

FERC Order 881 compliance and determining inter-regional transfer capability will require new levels of transmission system capability and control, which is difficult for the current power grid to accommodate. Our strategic partnership with LineVision aims to address these challenges by combining LineVision’s LineRate® sensor-based platform and Ulteig’s extensive expertise in power systems – with the goal of providing electric utilities with increased transmission system efficiency and reliability.

Through this partnership, LineVision and Ulteig combine their complementary strengths to provide best-in-class technology and engineering solutions for AAR and DLR implementation, providing utilities with a single source for integrated advanced line rating solutions and maximizing the line capacity to reduce costs.
