Midwest Roots and a Passion For the Industry

Jamie was born and raised in the great state of Iowa, where he still lives with his wife and four children. His passion for the industry ignited with his decision to pursue an education in Computer Aided Design Technology.

“Over the course of my 25-year career,” Jamie says, “I’ve been fortunate to work with a multitude of exceptional mentors. Their guidance, wisdom, and support have been instrumental in shaping my professional journey. They’ve not only imparted technical knowledge but also instilled in me a deep appreciation for the intricacies and nuances of our field.”

The recent shift toward digital delivery in the industry has further fueled his passion, inspiring him to continually learn, grow and contribute to collective progress.

Proficiency with Bentley Software

Jamie’s proficiency with Bentley Software is extensive and diverse. His experience includes working with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, OpenBridge Designer, ProjectWise, ProStructures, ConceptStation, iTwin Capture Modeler and LumenRT. This expertise has been particularly valuable in his work on numerous Department of Transportation projects, allowing him to apply and expand his skills in real-world contexts.

In addition to his practical experience, Jamie teaches courses on Introduction to MicroStation, Road Design using OpenRoads Designer and Structural Design and Detailing at Des Moines Area Community College. These courses heavily utilize Bentley software, enabling Jamie to impart practical, hands-on knowledge to the next generation of Civil Engineering Technicians and Designers.

Jamie’s Role at Ulteig

In his role as Bentley CADD Manager at Ulteig, Jamie provides comprehensive support and training on Bentley products to the Transportation team. His responsibilities are multifaceted, involving not only the technical aspects of these tools but also their practical application in projects. Jamie’s role allows him to combine his technical expertise with his passion for teaching and mentoring.

Jamie is also actively involved in shaping Ulteig’s Digital Delivery program, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing efficiency, accuracy and collaboration through the use of the latest digital tools. He finds this role both challenging and rewarding, providing him with an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the company’s evolution.

Ulteig’s Distinctive Digital Delivery Capabilities

Jamie says that what sets Ulteig apart in the realm of digital delivery “is our proactive and deliberate approach to enterprise and design technology and its application.” He adds that Ulteig has made significant investments to harness the transformative potential of technology, developing innovative model-based workflows that empower designers and engineers across all business groups. This forward-thinking approach fosters a collaborative environment, ensuring greater transparency and involvement for clients at every project stage.

“The adoption of digital delivery methods in Civil Engineering offers a multitude of advantages that extend beyond the immediate team and have a direct, positive impact on project outcomes,” says Jamie. These include lower project costs, enhanced visualization and better asset management.

Digital tools increase accuracy and foresee potential issues earlier in the process, leading to fewer change orders and reduced costs. Detailed, realistic models and simulations aid decision-making and effectively communicate project details to stakeholders.

Digital models used throughout construction create digital as-builts, providing future engineers with confidence in the plans they see, leading to better maintenance and management of infrastructure. “Moreover,” Jamie adds, “the collaborative nature of digital delivery methods fosters a culture of innovation.” This results in more effective and efficient project execution, benefiting both our team and our clients.
