Ahmed Garad, PE, Technical Manager – Substation

Ahmed graduated with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and has a Master’s degree from the University of Saint Thomas.
He is responsible for the physical and protection & control design of high-voltage substations ranging from 34.5kV to 345kV. His background includes developing substation layouts, elevations, conduit and grounding plans, lightning protection, equipment specifications, one-lines, panel elevations, AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams.

He also manages a team of engineers and technicians who work on all aspects of substation design out of the St. Paul office.

Why are you passionate about what you do/why do you love what you do?

“I am passionate about power and renewable energy and helping younger engineers develop in their career.  Also, I enjoy traveling and doing activities with my kids, staying healthy and being active and doing home improvement projects.

My job is never boring, there’s always excitement and challenges. I enjoy working in a collaborative environment where everyone is working towards the same goal. It feels great knowing that my work has a direct impact on improving our power grid and infrastructure while delivering innovative solutions to our clients.”
